Apartment 1 room. 1BR doesn't take alot of effort to hide the fact that it's a character study about the inner workings of the cult of Scientology. Anyone who watches this film will immediately notice the parallels between the cultists in 1BR and Scientologists. For one thing, the main character goes out west to start a new life in the showbiz industry as a costume designer. Where does she end up in a commune that isn't all that it seems on the outside. Of course they brainwash her and put her through a horrendous re-education program that includes both physical and psychological torture. She's forced to disconnect from the suppressive people in her life. anyone that isn't a member of the cult. Sound familiar? Of course it does. There are no secrets. She has no privacy. Every moment of her life is carefully monitored and controlled. Where have we seen this before. Even the founding father of 1BR's cult, Charles D. Ellerby, is a carbon copy of L. Ron Hubbard.
While it is heavily (and I can't stress that enough) inspired by Scientology, it is a slow burn horror that relies mostly on tension and less on violence and gore, although there's some of that as well. The film meticulously takes you through the process of brain-washing and re-educating new members into the cult. sometimes to fault. It does get a little boring at times and you couldn't be blamed for playing with your phone a few times during the film. It takes a long time to get to where it needs to go, and even when the climax is reached, there's still alot left unanswered. Perhaps that again, goes back to the influence of Scientology, which still exists and still functions.
